A guige is a strap that is attached to a shield that enables the shield to be slung around the shoulder/neck. This enables the shield to be hang from the neck if need be, or be slung on the back for transport.
Sometimes this strap is referred to as simply as a shield strap and this leather strap would have been affixed to shields by rivets or eyelets set into the shield itself.
It differs from an enarme which is designed for the forearm.
