A flying wedge (or swine formation) is a triangular formation favoured by the Vikings. The point of the wedge is made up of particularly skilled fighters, and the tightly packed ranks of fighters behind them make an unstoppable force.
A flying wedge formation was mostly used to break up an enemy formation, as the forward impetus of the wedge would buckle a shieldwall very quickly.
