Contrary to popular belief in the SCA, "rattan" is not a grass species closely related to bamboo, but is instead a species of palm. It's lighter than wood and is longer lasting. Rattan deforms and turns to mush rather than splitting and shattering. There are several different methods for shaping rattan.
This is the material of choice for most SCA weapons (although some others are used).
