This is the entry for birthwort from Askham's Herbal.
Aristologia longa.
This herbe men do call it Redmader, the vertue of this herbe is thus. It will unbynde the stopping of the lyver, and lette passe evel wyndes that be stopped within a mans body, also if it be drunken with wyne it clenseth and purgeth all men of al maner of venim that is in a mans bodye. Also it clenseth and purgeth al maner of diseases that be rotten within and without in the baynes and in the teeth thet ben rotten. This herbe is hoote and drye, and it muste be gathered in Harvest.
