Equestrian is the term used to refer to things and activities relating to horses, primarly for leisure and sport. In period, these would include:

The term cavalry is used for those involved in mounted combat.

Equestrian in the SCA

In the SCA, an equestrian is a person who engages in martial activities on horseback. The term also describes the activities themselves.

Most equestrian activities in the SCA do not involve direct confrontation between participants. Instead, contestants take the field one at a time and try to achieve the highest score and/or the best time for the activity. Scores and/or times are compared at the end of the contest to determine the winner.

Examples of equestrian contests

Some kingdoms (including Meridies) are now experimenting with mounted combat using padded weapons and jousting using styrofoam lances.
