Sword and Board is an SCAism referring to the first level of authorisation that a heavy fighter must undergo in order to participate in SCA armoured combat, that is, "sword and shield".

A new fighter must first prove he is capable of fighting safely with a sword and shield before being allowed to authorize in polearms, blunt weapons, two-stick, etc.

Fighters, even experienced ones with other authorisations, often fight "sword and board", particularly in tournaments.
