Short sword is a modern term to describe any sword with a length shorter than that of an arming sword and longer than a dagger. The term is descriptive rather than referring any actual weapon. The Roman gladius could be described as a short sword.
The term is popularised in the roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons.
