In heraldry the stag's posture have specific names:
- at gaze : standing with the head facing the spectator
- at speed : Running
- courant : Running
- lodged : Lying down
- salient : Springing
- statant : Standing
- trippant : Walking
Any colour to its horns, are described as "attired of" so-and-so.. "Attired of" a number, means that the horns have that many tines or points.
