Stock (cooking)

Stock refers to a liquid used as a flavouring base for dishes. Common stocks include chicken stock and beef stock. Vegetable stocks generally include onions, carrots and celery. Stock is made primarily with bones, and should not be substituted for broth, which is made primarily with meat.

Stocks (justice)

The stocks are a set of wooden rails with holes cut in them for the wrists and ankles of criminals. The miscreants were imprisoned in the stocks so that all the public could see who the guilty were. This gave the populace good target practice for throwing - rotten eggs, mouldy fruit and vegetables, and even excrement, were popular missiles - and spitting, as well as improving their insults.
