The grain/flesh stitch passes straight through a piece of leather. The thread could be done in a double-threaded runnning stitch or back stitch when making shoes depending on whether the stitch was to hold together a seam or simply being a decorative stitch.

This stitch is typically used on upper to attach them to soles or rands. They can also be used on heel stiffeners.
