In heraldry, a line which is drawn engrailed is made up of a series of semi-circles touching each other side by side. On an ordinary the line is drawn with the points towards the field, and away from the ordinary. In the case of a simple line division the general consensus seems to be that the lines will point towards the base, with the exception of per pale when it will point towards the sinister.
