The term diminutive has two distinct meanings in SCA heraldry.

When referring to names a diminutive is a shortened or pet form of a name. For example, Meg is a diminutive or Margaret.

On a device a diminutive is a smaller version of an ordinary. Some texts suggest specific ratios, such as a quarter, however these are not widely accepted. An example of a diminutive is the bendlet, which is the diminutive of the bend.
