Period Woodworking was a major industry. The high availability of wood as well as the ease with which it can be formed are major reasons for this.

This woodwork was done using a variety of hand tools.

Modern woodworking tends to revolve around the use of tools powered by electric or fossil fuel powered tools. There is however, a resurgence in the use of only human powered tools. This results from the increased availability of these tools which are medieval in function, if sometimes not of form.

In Australia, those who use hand tools in their woodworking are referred to as Dark Siders by their power tool using brethren.
