Westphalia is roughly the Germanic region between the rivers Rhine and Weser, located both north and south of the Ruhr River. Westphalia was originally a district of the Duchy of Saxony. In 1180 Westphalia was elevated to the rank of a duchy by Emperor Barbarossa.
