The minnesinger Walther von der Vogelweide (c. 1170 - c. 1230) is the most famous of the medieval German lyric poets. He was born in Tirol, and studied under Pemmar the Old. Among others, he wrote for the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, who gave him a small fief in Franconia.
