Vasco da Gama (c.1469 - 1524) was a Portuguese navigator who discovered the sea route to India. He was born in South West Portugal and was chosen by King Manoel I for his voyage to India in 1497.

In 1502 he founded a Portuguese colony in Mozambique. In 1524 he went again to India as viceroy, but died two months after arriving in Goa.
