The trivium of grammar, rhetoric, and logic formed the three subjects taught first in medieval universities. This was a preparation for the quadrivium.

The Humanists expanded the study of the trivium by introducing classical texts in Greek and Latin, although it is probably correct to state that the trivium itself pre-dated humanism.
