Thegn

Thegn is a term given to landholders who owe military service to a lord or king. Thegn replaced the term gesith during the middle Anglo-Saxon period of English history. The role of the thegn consisted of both statecraft and warrior, but became overshadowed by the introduction of the Housecarle class.
