Alfred married Ealhswith, daughter of a Mercian nobleman, and descended from the former Mercian royal house. Their daughter, Elfreda, married Baldwin, Count of Flanders, and rom them, in due course, descended Matilda who was to marry William the Conqueror. Their son, Edward succeeded his father on the English throne.
