Swedish is a Germanic Language that evolved from Old Norse in Sweden and Finland. The first Swedish texts are dated to the 13th century but there were earlier runic inscriptions. Modern Swedish is based on a Stockholm dialect. Until the official recognition of Finnish in the 18th century it was the main tongue of Finland.
