Swabia is currently a region in Germany and was referred to as Alamannia prior to the 10th century (approximately 928 when the first duke was established). Swabia originally covered the territory which later split into the French province of Alsace, the German principalities of Baden and Württemberg, and most of northern Switzerland. It evolved along different lines from the more centralized province of Bavaria and the larger but more fragmented province of Saxony.
