The Scots house of Stewart or Stuart derived from the hereditary position of High Steward, the first holder being Walter FitzAlan, appointed by David I around 1150.
When, in 1371, Robert II became king, he absorbed the Stewardship into the royal Crown, but the name became the surname of the kings of Scotland, as well, over time of their extended and extending family. The Stuart spelling evolved into being the Royal name, the Stewart representing non-Royal lines of descent.
