In heraldry the stag's posture have specific names:

  • at gaze : standing with the head facing the spectator
  • at speed : Running
  • courant : Running
  • lodged : Lying down
  • salient : Springing
  • statant : Standing
  • trippant : Walking

Any colour to its horns, are described as attired of so-and-so tincture. Attired of a number, means that the horns have that many tines or points.
