St. Monica was born in North Africa in the 4th century. She married a pagan named Patritius. She bore three children to him, the eldest of whom was St Augustine.

Her persistence and fortitude in Christianity eventually converted her eldest son to the faith, and Augustine in turn converted his father.

St. Monica died in 387. Her feast day is on 4th May and she is the patron saint of alcoholics.
