Spanish is a Romance language with the earliest texts dating to the 10th century. The epic Cantar de Mio Cid "Song of my Cid" came from the 12th century. After the merging of the Spanish Kingdoms in the 15th century, the dialect from Castile became the official tongue and modern Spanish is sometimes called Castilian as a result.

Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes was written in the 17th century.
