A skep is a beehive consisting of an upside-down wicker or straw basket. Later forms of skep were made from clay. In much of the developed modern world these are now illegal as they don't allow for the comb to be removed for inspection.

The craft of producing skeps had almost died out and the number producing these in the UK is very small. Such traditional crafts are currently undergoing a resurgence of interest.
