The Saxons were a Germanic group who invaded and settled in Britain in the 6th century(?). With them came a new culture and the language that formed the basis for Old English. While the proper name for the invaders is Anglo-Saxons on account of the Angles also being invaders, you will often find the "new" British being erroneously referred to as just Saxons, especially when comparing them to the Normans.
