Since 1870 Rome has been the capital of Italy, however before that it was the major city in the Papal States. For much of the Middle Ages and Renaissance it was the city of the popes, although some of them headed out to Avignon.

Before the middle ages, Rome was the seat and centre of the Roman Empire. The Fall of Rome in the 7th century C.E. is considered by many to mark the beginning of the SCA period.
