The raven is the ubiquitous jet-black bird of Europe and North America, and are known throughout in history and lore. In Norse mythology, Hugin and Munin are pets and servants of Odin. The success of the English monarchy has been tied to the presence of ravens at the Tower of London, and you can see them there to this day. Because of their status in history and their modern goth connotations, ravens are a popular charge in SCA heraldry.
