A quill is a writing and drawing instrument commonly made from a bird's feather. The quill tip is fashioned with a penknife to a tip, exposing the hollow of the feather. A delicate split is then cut into the tip of the quill lengthwise.

The quill tip is then dipped into an ink well and applied to paper, parchment or other writing surface.

As a Heraldic Charge

In heraldry, a quill is typically depicted point-down and blazoned a quill-pen.
