Purple dyes were much prized as few sources of purple were availible. Chief amoung them were shellfish purples ([[tyrian purple]] and [[kermes]]) which were bright dark purples (perhaps rather more redish in tone than modern purples) and also pale pink/mauve from [[lichen]] ([[orchil]]), which was much more availible, but also much less colourfast. see also [[period brown]].
