The pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a fruit bearing shrub or tree common throughout the Middle Ages. It symbolised birth and death because of its ability to bleed. A wounded unicorn was thought to bleed pomegranate seeds.

The pomegranate was used as the personal emblem of Maximillian I.
