A plant is a woody or fibrous thing, that undergoes photosynthesis.

Plants were useful to medieval people as:

• foodstuffs, herbs and spices
• dyestuffs and paints
• source of wood for woodworking and combustion
• source of fibres
• medicines
• ingredients for perfumes, cosmetics and bleaching and colouring agents

Plant (brewing)

When making ginger beer, the starting culture of ginger, sugar and yeast is known as the plant.
