According to his vida, the troubadour Peirol (before 1160 - after 1222) was a poor knight from the Auvergne who was both accomplished and courtly. In a rare piece of evidence for performance practice Albertet de Sestairon described the fact that Peirol would accompany himself on the vielle.

Thirty two songs of Peirol survive, seventeen with melodies. He cultivated the trobar leu style, mainly with cansos.
