In heraldry, the pale is an ordinary in the shape of a thick vertical line.
Traditionally (or pedantically) the pale is supposed to take up the middle third of the shield.

Its "baby cousin" is the pallet, about half as wide. It is relatively rare, however, and tends to come in 2s or 3s.
