The Saxons founded Oxford, which previously had been known simply as a crossing point of the River Isis, at which St.Frideswide's nunnery had been set up.
It appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for the year 912.
In the 10th century it was on the border between Wessex and Mercia and was raided several times by Danes.
Its university was founded in the 12th century, with the colleges of University, Balliol and Merton being founded specifically in 1249, 1263 and 1264 respectively.
Its cathedral was formerly the Priory Church of St.Frideswide before being refounded as Christ Church in 1546.
