Old Norse is a Germanic Language which was spoken in the Nordic countries. It later split into Icelandic, Norwegian and Faroese, and modern Icelandic is still close enough to its original form that speakers can read the old sagas without too much trouble. The height of Old Norse's influence was in the 11th century, when it was spoken throughout Scandinavia as well as in the Viking settlements in Britain and Northern Russia.
