The Moors were another name for the Muslim invaders of (successively) the Northern coast of Africa, the Spanish peninsula and southern France. They were also known as Saracens.

Geomorphically, moors are extensive undulating areas of marginal fertility, generally at raised altitudes, which dominate much of the north of England, especially over the Pennine ridge. They were slowly colonised in period, usually up river valleys, and founded a deal of the sheep industry of England.
