Merlin is the name given to the sage or wizard who aided and advised the legendary King Arthur of Britain. Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote two 12th Century texts on the tales of Merlin. Like Arthur, attempts have been made to link Merlin to historical figures. One suggestion is that some of tales may come from the actions of two men Myrddin Emrys and Myrddin Wylt, in post-Roman Britain.

A merlin is also a medium-size bird of prey that is a member of the falcon family. In period, it was used in falconry.
