A maxim is a saying or truism which reflects some basic truth about something. Maxims are often used as rules of thumb, but tend to be more cyncial than proverbs.

An age-old military maxim is: The first casualty of any battle is the plan.

An SCA maxim is: Start time is the posted time plus thirty minutes.
