early period:

T-tunics with longer than usual keyhole neckline slits are occasionally shown being used for breastfeeding, with one breast thrust through the keyhole. Many pictures are of the Virgin Mary feeding Jesus, and may explain why this type of image is not common - during the English Reformation of the church many churches were destroyed and such images would be considered to show an improper amount of breast (despite the context).
