A manuscript (Latin manu scriptus meaning "written by hand"), strictly speaking, is any written document that is put down by hand, in contrast to being printed or reproduced some other way.

In period many manuscripts were produced on vellum. Their production stopped, for the large part, with the invention of the Printing Press.
