A kitchen is a room in which food is prepared and cooking is done. In period, kitchens were often a separate building apart from the main house to keep smoke out and to lower the chance of a catastrophic fire. Wealthy nobles often had a separate building for a kitchen, and sometimes several kitchens depending on the food prepared in each.

The poorer folk would either cook directly in their fireplaces in their main rooms, over an open fire outdoors, or in large public kitchens used by the entire community.
