Greece is an area of south eastern Europe best known during the Middle Ages for the achievements of its classical culture.

Greece was part of the East Roman Empire, until successive invasions by Goths, Huns, Slavs, Avars and Bulgars tore apart the land. Byzantine rule was re-established between the 9th and 11th centuries, leading to an era of relative peace.

The fall of Constantinople in 1204 led to Italian domination of Greece. Even after the Byzantine recaptured Constantinople much of Greece remained under Venetian control.

Successful invasion by the Turks saw Greece become part of the Ottoman Empire in 1456.
