Grass is a very common plant, most people have it in their lawns. Small lawns (presumably of grass) are attested to as a luxury enjoyed by medieval nobles as far back as the 12th Century.

I don't know about its nutitional value to humans, but some species are edible.

Dogs and cats are also wont to use it as an emetic.
