There is scant information on the life of minnesingermanuscript C to Gottfried as meister indicates that he is of the middle class. His major work, Tristan, also contains enough evidence to date it to the first decade of the 13th century.

Tristan is a work of major significance, in spite of the fact that the story of Tristram and Yseult had been told many times before. Gottfried's version follows closely that of Thomas of Brittany.

Gottfried's lyrical works include one minnelied in praise of the Virgin Mary and several didactic strophes.
