Gentle

Gentle is a gender-neutral term to refer to either a gentleman or a gentlewoman; that is to say, one of gentle birth, not of noble birth but neither of common birth.

This is almost certainly a modern backformation, since the idea of gender-neutral language is not a particularly medieval one.
