A relative of the onion, Allium sativum has been so widely cultivated over the centuries that it's difficult to pinpoint its origin. Its leaves look a lot like grass, and the flowers are a whitish colour and are grouped together. The segmented bulb is the only part of the plant used. It plant grows well in almost any soil, but does best in a well-watered, sandy soil and in full sun. Planting should takes place in late winter or early spring.
The pungent aroma and taste are easy to recognise. It has both medicinal and culinary uses. It has been used to prevent colds and as an antiseptic.
Garlic is also believed to deter vampires.
