A fencing sword with a bowl-shaped guard and a long, narrow, fluted blade that has no cutting edge and tapers to a blunted point. A cross section of the weapon shows that the blade is triangular in shape. Due to its thickness, the blade is more straight and harder to 'whip' than the foil. In the rules of sport fencing, the entire body is a valid target in epee fencing. This explains the large guard (commonly called a "bell guard" for its sonic abilities), as the hand is also a valid target. Epee fencing tends to be slower between actions than the other weapons.
