The ember days are twelve days set aside for fasting. There are four ember weeks, roughly thirteen weeks apart, in which the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are all ember days. During these days food is restricted to one full meal per day plus two partial meatless meals.

The word "ember" is derived from the Anglo-Saxon ymb-ren, a circuit or revolution in reference to the four-season cycle of feast days.
